Children’s Foot Care - Podiatrist in Cherry Hill, Voorhees and West Deptford, NJ[[posterous-content:pid___0]]

Dr. Amy Herskowitz of Woodbury Foot Care Centre discusses the symptoms, causes and treatments for Children’s Foot Problems.

 http://www.sjfootdoctors.com

Children with strong, healthy feet avoid many kinds of lower extremity problems later in life. That's why it is important to inspect your children's feet periodically.

Infants

The size and shape of your baby's feet change quickly during their first year. Because a baby's feet are flexible, too much pressure or strain can affect the shape of their feet. It's important to allow baby to kick and stretch their feet freely. Also, make sure shoes and socks do not squeeze the toes.

Toddlers

Do not to force a toddler to walk before s/he is ready. Once walking begins, watch the toddler's gait. Many toddlers have a pigeon-toe gait, which is normal. Some initially learn to walk landing on their toes instead of their heels. Most children outgrow both these problems. But other conditions detected early can be treated more easily.

When Foot Care Is Needed

To help with flatfeet, special shoes or orthotics may be prescribed. To correct mild in-toeing or out-toeing, your toddler may need to sit in a different position while playing or watching TV. If your child's feet turn in or out a lot, corrective shoes, splints, or night braces may be prescribed.

The foot's bone structure is well-formed by the time your child reaches age 7 or 8, but if a growth plate (the area where bone growth begins) is injured, the damaged plate may cause the bone to grow oddly. With a doctor's care, however, the risk of future bone problems is reduced.

Remember to check your child's shoe size often. Make sure there is space between the toes and the end of the shoe and that the shoes are roomy enough to allow the toes to move freely. Don't let your child wear hand-me-down shoes.

Children’s Foot Health - Podiatrist in Valley Stream and Lake Success, NY

Dr. Mary Ann Bilotti of Long Island Podiatry Group discusses Children’s Foot Care.

Kid’s Feet

Do Your Children's Feet Have Any of These Common Foot Problems?

Pigeon Toe (intoe) An inward position of the feet when standing or walking.

Out-Toe - Child "walks like a duck."

Flatfeet - In children 3 years of older this should be evaluated.

Overlapping toes - These hereditary problems if caught early can be corrected without surgery.

Clumsiness - If your child stumbles over their own feet often it may be a sign of flat footedness or foot positional problems.

Warts, Nails and Skin Disorders - Rash, itchiness and deformed nails are common and easily treated.

Most of the above are hereditary and if evaluated early are treated without embarrassing shoes, casts or braces. We use the most modern techniques in children's foot care with complete cooperation from your pediatrician.

New Treatment for "Pigeon Toe"

We can fit your infant child with the new CRS (Counter Rotational System), developed by Langer Bio mechanics Inc., of Deer Park, NY.

The CRS allows infants to crawl while maintaining foot position. It replaces the traditional rigid type bars (Denis-Brown Bar) still commonly used today. The CRS bar is designed with hinges which allow the infant to crawl and even stand while being treated. Parents can rest easy while their child's foot problems are being treated both safely and effectively

Wheaton Brace Reduces Need to Cast Infants

"The Wheaton Brace is useful for most mild and moderate cases of tibial torsion (bowing) and metatarsus adductus ("C"-shaped feet)", states Dr. Bilotti. "We still have to resort to serial plaster casts for some stubborn cases." As with most medical problems, these conditions respond well to treatment when caught very early - especially before age one. The Wheaton Brace (Wheaton Brace Company, Carol Stream, Il) is the latest advance in the treatment of children with bowing of the lower legs (tibial torsion) and turned-in or "C" shaped feet (metatarsus adductus).

These very common foot conditions are usually present from birth and many times will resolve without treatment.

The new brace is both comfortable and effective. Prior to its inception, these conditions were treated with weekly applications of plaster casts to the infant's legs and feet. You can imagine how traumatic this is for both child and parent.

The Truth About Laser Foot Surgery

The laser has gained recent acclaim in modern medical care. This is mostly due to the advances made in eye or cataract surgery. The laser is also used by Podiatrists for removal and correction of several common soft tissue foot problems.

The laser functions as a concentrated beam of light energy: similar to focusing the sun's rays with a magnifying glass. The laser beam itself is hot and acts on moist tissue by evaporating water contained in tissue. Therefore, it is useful in removing warts, moles and skin lesions (not bone ). The laser also can be used to remove fungal nails permanently.

Laser surgery tends to be less painful, quicker healing, and less bloody since the light beam seals bleeding vessels or cauterizes them. We want to stress that LASERS CANNOT CUT BONE, therefore, they CANNOT BE USED TO CORRECT BUNIONS, HAMMERTOES OR ANY BONE DISORDER The laser is a very useful tool for today's medical practitioner. It has specific uses and is an advantage when used together with more traditional treatments. Unfortunately, the laser does not do away with the need for anesthesia prior to surgery.

Ingrown Toenail - Austin Podiatrist, Michael Golf, DPM

Dr. Michael Golf discusses the symptoms, causes and permanent treatment for ingrown toenails.

http://www.michaelgolf.com

Ingrown nails are nails whose corners or sides dig painfully into the skin, often causing infection. They are frequently caused by improper nail trimming, but also by shoe pressure, injury, fungus infection, heredity, and poor foot structure.

Toenails should be trimmed straight across, slightly longer than the end of the toe, with toenail clippers.

If they become painful or infected, contact our office. We may remove the ingrown portion of the nail and if the condition reoccurs frequently, may permanently remove the nail.

Laser Treatment for Toenail Fungus - Podiatrist in Stratford, Turnersville and Mt. Ephraim, NJ

Dr. Scott Warren discusses using laser therapy to treat fungal toenails.

http://academypodiatry.com

Laser therapy or "photobiomodulation" is the use of specific wavelength of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects. The effects include but not limited to improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation, decreased swelling and vasodilation. Laser therapy has been widely utilized in Europe by physical therapists, nurses, and doctors as far back as the 1970s. Now, after FDA clearance in 2002, laser therapy is being used extensively in the United States.

Laser therapy is proven to biostimulate tissue repair and growth. The laser accelerates wound healing and decreases inflammation, pain and scar tissue formation as well as producing singlet oxygen, which destroys fungus. When it comes to pain management and fungus destruction class IV laser therapy provides dramatic results, is non-addictive and virtually free of side effects.

Dr. Ed Davis discusses how custom orthotics can help correct biomechanical problems of the foot to alleviate heel pain and other foot problems.

http://www.southtexaspodiatrist.com

A prescription foot orthosis is an in-shoe brace which is designed to correct for abnormal foot and lower extremity function [the lower extremity includes the foot, ankle, leg, knee, thigh and hip. In correcting abnormal foot and lower extremity function, the prescription foot orthosis reduces the strain on injured structures in the foot and lower extremity, allowing them to heal and become non-painful. In addition, prescription foot orthoses help prevent future problems from occurring in the foot and lower extremity by reducing abnormal or pathological forces acting on the foot and lower extremity. A prescription foot orthosis is more commonly known by the public as a "foot orthotic".

Podiatrists prescribe two main types of prescription foot orthoses for their patients, accommodative orthoses and functional foot orthoses. Both types of prescription foot orthoses are used to correct the foot plant of the patient so that the pain in their foot or lower extremity will improve so that normal activities can be resumed without pain. However, accommodative and functional foot orthoses are generally made using different materials and may not look or feel the same. Both types of prescription foot orthoses are nearly always prescribed as a pair to allow more normal function of both feet [similar to having both the left and right wheels of a car realigned in a front end alignment.

Dr. James McKee, Podiatrist in Annapolis, Maryland discusses foot treatments for sports injuries.

http://www.podiatrygroup.us

Many sports are hard on the feet because of quick repetitive movements, constricting footwear, and/or increased exposure to injury or trauma. Following is a brief overview of some of the most common injuries that result from particular sports.

Martial Arts and Kick Boxing

Injuries commonly seen as a result of martial arts and kick boxing include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, sesamoiditis, and ankle sprains. Stretching is recommended to help prevent injury; specifically, a minimum of 15 minutes of stretching before performing any kicking or punching.

Aerobics

Impact forces from aerobics can reach up to six times the force of gravity, which is transmitted to each of the 26 bones in the foot. That is why proper shoes are crucial to successful, injury-free aerobics. Shoes should provide sufficient cushioning and shock absorption to compensate for pressure on the foot many times greater than found in walking. They must also have good medial-lateral stability.

Team Sports

Activities such as football, baseball, basketball, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse often lead to ankle injuries as a result of play on artificial surfaces, improper footwear, and/or inadequate stretching.

Heel Pain Treatment - Podiatrist in East Orange, Newark and Orange, NJ

Dr. Bruce Theall discusses the causes, symptoms and treatments for heel pain (plantar fasciitis).

http://www.drtheall.com

Plantar fasciitis is the term commonly used to refer to heel and arch pain traced to an inflammation on the bottom of the foot. More specifically, plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the connective tissue, called plantar fascia, that stretches from the base of the toes, across the arch of the foot, to the point at which it inserts into the heel bone. Overpronation is the most common cause of plantar fasciitis. As the foot rolls inward excessively when walking, it flattens the foot, lengthens the arch, and puts added tension on the plantar fascia. Over time, this causes inflammation.

Also known as heel spur syndrome, the condition is often successfully treated with conservative measures, such as the use of anti-inflammatory medications, ice packs, stretching exercises, orthotic devices, and physical therapy. Note: Please consult your physician before taking any medications. In persistent cases, Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment (ESWT) may be used to treat the heel pain.

Ingrown Toenail  - Podiatrist in Millburn, Livingston and Maplewood, NJ

Dr. Nathan Jennato discusses the causes, symptoms and treatments for ingrown toenails.

http://www.thepodiatrycenter.net

Ingrown toenails often are the result of trimming your toenails too short, particularly on the sides of your big toes.

While they are common, ingrown toenails can be painful. When trimming your nails, avoid tapering the corners so that the nail curves with the shape of your toe. The sides of the nail will curl down and dig into your skin. Shoes that are too tight or short also may cause ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenail start out hard, swollen and tender, and later, may become sore, red and infected. Your skin may start to grow over the ingrown toenail.

Soaking your foot in warm, soapy water several times each day is usually a good way to treat an ingrown nail. Please contact our office to determine the best course of treatment for your condition.

Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed if an infection is present. Part of your ingrown toenail (partial nail plate avulsion) may need to be surgically removed if an acute infection occurs. The procedure involves injecting the toe with an anesthetic and cutting out the ingrown part of the toenail.

You can prevent ingrown toenails by:

Trimming your toenails straight across with no rounded corners.

Ensuring that your shoes and socks are not too tight.

Keeping your feet clean at all times.
